Homeschooling

Mom, I appreciate so much all of the effort you put into homeschooling me. If you have ever had any doubts about whether or not you did a good job with that, there should be no doubt in your mind now. I am about to graduate with a 4.0 and then start in the fall getting paid over $20,000 a year to continue going to school. These accomplishments would not have been at all possible had I not had an excellent educational background coming into college.

As I think back to all the professors that have helped me succeed during my time here at CSU and also at Red Rocks, the help that they have given me seems to pale in comparison to how you helped me through homeschooling. For 13 years, you were in charge of my education. Every year you had to research and decide which classes I needed to take in order to acquire the necessary skills and advance to the next grade. During the early grades, you spent time with me each and every day, teaching me what I needed to know. And even when I got into the higher grades and I was doing most everything on my own, there was still grading and helping me out with various things here and there.

Thank you for helping me to accomplish my dreams through you dedication to my education!!

Lori, You’ve done a superb job as Mom of our family. You made countless little sacrifices and many, many large sacrifices for the well-being of our kids and our family. In addition you’ve done lots of the little things — the things that go often unnoticed and underappreciated, the things that seem insubstantial in their influence, the things that in the details you may not even remember doing — the things that when added together day-in-and-day-out, grow from a drop to a trickle to a brook, then a stream, and finally a river, one rushing torrent of water that has influenced our kiddos for good in so many ways.

Thank you for your commitment to our children and our family. And thank you for your commitment to me. I know I’ve done many things that have complicated our lives, but you’ve persisted in your commitment to us.

You’ve well earned that most honorable distinction we call “Mother”.

Thanks Mom for all the crazy things that you have supported me through. I have been reminded of how supportive you have always been to me as I’ve been working on graduate school stuff this semester. I really appreciate that you helped me get my trip set up to Pullman here in just over a week, and for all the other things you did to help me out with my grad school visits, like getting my clothes ready for each trip.

I know it hasn’t always been easy for you to support me through everything I’ve wanted to do. One thing I think of in particular was the Italy missions trip. I remember when I first brought it up with you, how you were pretty shocked I was thinking about going and pretty hesistant to let me go out there. But after you warmed up to the idea you were very supportive of my trip, even if you were worried and reluctant to let me go out there.

I am so greatful to have a mom who is always willing to support me in my passions, even if they aren’t exactly what you would want me to do. It has been such a blessing to me and I am excited to have your support as I go away for graduate school this fall.

I don’t really think I’ve realized how lucky I am to have you as a mom until recently. You’ve always taught us things and taken care of us so well that I guess I assumed most moms are that way. But I’ve come to realize that many (even Christian) moms don’t do half as good a job as you. Often in conversation I hear other kids describe life at home or tell stories about their struggles, and I come to realize that what you’ve down for us is truly unique and outstanding.

You were strict in many ways when we were children. You always disciplined us when we needed to be disciplined. You didn’t let us waste away the hours in front of video games. I don’t mean that you were strict in a bad way; rather, you had the courage to correct us or with-hold from us what we foolishly wanted. Many parents don’t have the guts to do that, but you did. And that is exactly the job of a parent: to teach and show children what they shouldn’t do and shouldn’t pursue.

I love life, and much of the reason for that is the discipline and love that you taught me.
